Learning to Be Still
A Classical Still Life Painting Retreat with Johanna Larkin
9–15 November 2026
Spend six days slowing down, looking closely and rediscovering the extraordinary beauty hidden within everyday objects.
Join award-winning artist Johanna Larkin for an immersive classical oil painting retreat where you'll learn not only how to paint still life—but how to truly see it.
Set within the peaceful surrounds of Greenhills Art Centre, this retreat combines personalised tuition, beautiful accommodation, home-cooked meals and uninterrupted studio time, giving you the space to immerse yourself in your creative practice.
Why Still Life?
Still life has been painted by artists for centuries—not because the subjects are simple, but because they teach us to see.
Every bottle, bowl, onion and piece of linen becomes an opportunity to understand light, colour, edges, atmosphere and composition.
Throughout the week you'll discover that ordinary objects can become extraordinary paintings.
During Your Retreat You'll explore
• Classical composition
• Limited palette colour mixing with Oils
• Understanding light and shadow
• Edges and focus
• Painting glass and transparent objects
• Metallic surfaces
• Different textures
