Learn the art of setting up a still life, choosing objects, and creating a balanced composition. Discover the importance of lighting and how it transforms your subject, bringing depth, mood, and focus to your painting. We’ll also dive into the significance of edges—how to soften or sharpen them to create contrast and depth, giving your work a dynamic, lifelike quality.

Each day, we’ll focus on different aspects of building a still life painting from start to finish, with personalized guidance to help you grow as an artist.

Throughout the week Johanna will cover topics such as what painting materials to use and why, colour mixing, and varnishing. We will explore techniques such as painting different texture, metallics, and capturing transparencies such as glass.

You will be staying in a beautiful feature room and enjoying being pampered with delicious meals cooked in the onsite commercial kitchen.

Spend your days in a fun, supportive learning environment in a 250sqm air-conditioned studio. Evenings can be spent socializing with fellow artists, working in the studio or relaxing in one of the many nooks throughout the property.

Bio

Johanna is an accomplished award-winning artist with a passion for still life painting. She states that she has long been captivated by the extraordinary beauty that resides within the seemingly ordinary, seeking to do justice to the humble everyday item to uncover the hidden poetry and elegance in objects that often go unnoticed. Her passion for still life led her to take up study in Italy at the Florence Academy of Art in the summer of 2023 and through this creative journey, she has embraced the classical methods to harness the power of realism, chiaroscuro, and composition to breathe life into each painting. Johanna’s time in Italy was the catalyst for Johanna and Greg opening the Greenhills Art Centre in the hope that others may experience the rewards of stepping away from the distractions of everyday life, to dedicate time to work in a creative space alongside other creatives.
